Kindle Fire - Review

kindle review - The soon to be launched new tablet from Amazon which was recently announced by Jeff Bezos on 28th September has been creating a huge buzz amongst tech enthusiasts. The Kindle Fire offers the functionality of a tablet and also a color e-Book reader, but at a very attractive low price.
The Fire is designed primarily as a media consumption device which runs on a modified version of the Android OS. Does the Kindle Fire have what it takes to scorch the competition in the tablet world and be the tablet to beat or does it fall short? Read on to find out.

Features of the Kindle Fire
  • 7 inch color (IPS) touch screen (1024 x 6000 display resolution)
  • 8GB internal storage memory
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Amazon Cloud for unlimited storage of content
  • Lightweight, weighs just 413 grams
  • A single charge provides up to 8 hours of usage
  • Headphone jack, built-in stereo speakers
  • Free 1 month trial of Amazon Prime
Design
The Kindle Fire bears a strong resemblance to the BlackBerry Playbook in terms of the weight and feel of the device. The design itself is very streamlined, including just a power button on the unit. With its relatively small dimensions of 7.5 x 4.7 x 0.45 inches, the Fire is small enough to fit in a reasonably sized pocket or be held one-handed.

Display
The 7-inch multi-touch display with IPS (in plane switching) provides a maximum resolution of 1024 x 600 at 16 million colors. The ISP technology used provides an excellent range of viewing angles, allowing the display to be viewed at 178° and greater.
Despite having a lower resolution than the iPad, text on the Fire's display looks crisp and sharp. The display doesn't use e-Ink technology though however, so if you want a Kindle primarily for reading I recommend one of the earlier models which feature an e-Ink display to minimize eye strain over extended periods.
Connectivity
The Fire isn't too strong on the connectivity front. There is support for Wi-Fi, but no support for Bluetooth, 3G or GPS. The headphone jack is very handy for when you want to watch movies or listen to music in private.

User-interface
Amazon has taken a leaf from Apple's book and opted for simplicity when designing the Fire. The user-interface is very simple and provides easy navigation via the touch screen. There is a screen to flip through all your digital content plus an icon tray to store your favourite items.

Final Thoughts
When all is said and done, the Kindle Fire isn't an iPad killer, but it sure packs a punch with its spec and is a great entry for Amazon into the tablet market. The lack of cameras, extra internal storage options and 3G connectivity will be off-putting to some people who are after a full-fledged tablet experience, but for many who are after a pure media consumption device, what the Fire delivers will suffice.
The low price point of the Fire and its media capabilities are hugely appealing, making it worth serious consideration for anyone interested in enjoying media on the move.

Why You Should Buy a Kindle 3G WiFi, Not an Apple Toy

It didn't take Amazon long to figure out that they could whoop Apple's butt by doing one thing with the Kindle 3G Wifi: offering free 3G Wifi anywhere in the world to Kindle 3G Wifi owners. This one thing gave them an edge on the Apple iPad and was all they needed to ramp up interest in the third generation Kindle.

This makes the Apple iPad look worse by the day. Not only is the iPad about $800 for the good version, plus $90 per month for calling service and Wifi, it's big and bulky - too big to fit in a travel bag.

But the Kindle 3G Wifi on the other hand has a lot of things going for it.

First of all, the whole "free Wifi" thing is a great option. All you have to pay is the one-time fee of $189 for the Kindle device, and you're ready to get free Wifi for the entire life of your ebook reader.

Then, there's the slim, compact size. While Apple's iPad reaches nearly 10 inches in height, the Kindle 3G Wifi measures a mere 4.8 by 7.5 inches - big difference! This makes it a lot easier to hold on the bleachers in between watching your kids round the bases and take water breaks.

Now, I will say this about the iPad. It's a little easier to browse online on the iPad than on the Amazon Kindle 3G Wifi. But that being said, it's a whole lot cheaper to use the Kindle as an internet browser than using an iPad, wouldn't you say? So it's well worth it to browse for free than to pay $90 for some internet connectivity!

Also, the Kindle 3G Wifi comes in two different colors, white and graphite. The graphite resists stains and fingerprints more than the white, but the white gives you that iPad look if that's important to you. And of course, it's easy to find decorative covers to put on the Kindle to give it some style of your own.

But do you know what I like best? The long battery life. Yep, the battery life on a Kindle 3G Wifi far, far, far surpasses its own predecessors as well as the iPad when it comes to battery life. Amazon says that it lasts up to three weeks when the Wifi is turned on and up to one month - one whole month! - when Wifi is turned off.

So you don't have to cart around charging cables wherever you go in order to keep a charge long enough to get through "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest." You'll have plenty of charge to get through your whole ebook with this kind of battery life!

Kindle DX Reviews

When it comes to making the choice as to what e-book reader is right for you, the first thing that many people realize is that there is a whole lot of choices. Which one to choose though really depends on what you are looking for in a device. Perhaps you would like the ability to store up to 3,500 e-books on one device or maybe you would like a reader whose batteries won't die before you are finished reading. Or perhaps you would like one that does not require you hooking it up to your computer every time you would like to add to your library. If you are like most people, these are the things that you are looking for and what that means is that you are in need of a Kindle DX.

This latest version of the popular e-book reader has gone through a drastic overhaul while still maintain many of the great features that people have grown to love about it. It still features the automatically rotating display that is composed of Amazon's e-ink design. This new version though, unlike it predecessor is capable of supporting PDF files without the need for an online conversion.

This PDF support has been a much anticipated update due to the popularity of this file format with regards to online reading material. Of course you cannot help but notice the Amazon Kindle DX's increased display size because unlike its 6 inch predecessor, this display is an amazing 9.7 inches. That makes reading those books a much simpler process, especially if your eyes are not what they used to be. Many people have heard that the new device is being released and they are searching all over the web for Kindle DX reviews, but the truth is that if you like the previous models, then you will definitely love this one.
